PhD. Mechanical Engineering

The PhD programme of the normally run for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years for regular students. The programme leads to the award of a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialty in either Production Engineering or Energy Studies.

  2. To prepare the PhD graduates for lifelong learning and to meet intellectual, ethical and career challenges.
  3. To contribute on a continuous basis towards the growing technical needs of the nation and humanity at large.
  4. To produce PhD graduates that can compete globally.

PhD. Admission & Graduation Requirement

Candidates applying for the PhD programme must hold a good Master degree or M. Phil which includes coursework with a research thesis component (not project report) in a relevant Engineering discipline from the Ahmadu Bello University of any other recognized institution. In Addition, prospective candidates must have obtained a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 in a 4-point scale or an overall B grade. A candidate whose first degree or Master degree is not in Mechanical Engineering may be required to take some courses to meet up with any deficiency observed from his/her transcript of academic records. Candidates are also expected to have O’ Level Credits passes in English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subjects in not more than two sittings from a recognized examining body. The main goal of programme is to further develop the spirit and culture of enquiry in the Ph.D students. This objective is attainable by training such students in research within an environment that guarantees academic freedom, intellectual independence and individual creativity. The environment guarantees and provides a conducive environment for basic academic and applied researches for development.

Graduation Requirements

As part from passing the prescribed courses, candidates are required to satisfactorily present a minimum of three (3) seminar, i.e. proposal, progress and final seminars. A candidate will also be required to satisfactorily defend the researched thesis before a panel of external and internal examiners in addition to meeting the minimum course credits requirements.
